Shopping on the streets of Antiparos
Change of plans.
That’s always something you need to deal with when voyaging. The weather, malfunctions on board, and crew fatigue all put strains on any voyage, no matter how well thought out. The winds to Paros were a steady 25 knots, and the following seas of up to 1.5 meters pushed Anna from side to side the entire trip. We planned on setting anchor at the bottom of the island, hoping that its elevation would protect us from the Meltemi. We were wrong. We decided to go up the west side of the island to the marina and find a berth. Once we got to the narrow strait between Paros and Antiparos, we found a suitable spot. While we did not have any protection against the wind, it seemed better, and we accepted that we would have to anchor out in strong winds. So be it.
Speaking of Antiparos, this small gem of the Cyclades offers a stark contrast to the bustling islands nearby. Known for its serene beaches, crystal-clear waters, and charming village atmosphere, Antiparos is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle. The island boasts the impressive Cave of Antiparos, one of the most spectacular caves in Greece, featuring stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Additionally, the island’s Venetian Castle, located in the heart of Antiparos town, is a historical highlight that shouldn’t be missed.
Given we were already south and close to Milos, we planned on Mikel changing her flight to arrive there on the 18th. The plan was for her to join Brian and me, and then she and I would take Anna back to Barcelona once we dropped Brian off in Crete. At first, she wanted to do it but then became overwhelmed with the thought of cruising for a month. The route we need to take is the same one we covered in the summer of 2022 when Scott joined us for a 7-week “sober” cruise. Grieving is personal, and it takes the time it needs to filter through until the emotional surges are more moderate. Tracing the trip back to Barcelona has too many triggers for Mikel, and it’s understandable. So we are back to the original plan of me taking Anna back to Barcelona from Crete – a solo voyage that I am looking forward to. For me, the solace of being on Anna, tracing back to Barcelona with Scott at my side, is my way of grieving.

Mikel and David. Grieving never leaves me and surprises me when I lease expect. ❤️

Thanks for sharing that. Great descriptions of the trip. I’m glad it’s helping you through your grief.
No MIBS Barcelona trip this year. Should be next year.
