1995–2023
Scott Braaten, 28, passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023, in Dallas, TX. He was born March 15, 1995, in Oklahoma City, OK to David and Mikel Ann Braaten. He grew up living with his parents in Moscow, Barcelona, London, and Luxembourg and then settled in Washington, DC at the beginning of high school. He graduated from the Washington International School in Washington, DC in 2013. He was studying and working in the field of computer science at the time of his death, and his coursework included attendance at various universities including the University of California San Diego. He had a keen curiosity and interest in philosophy, computer programming and was most recently involved in projects relating to artificial intelligence. Throughout his life he greatly appreciated art and enjoyed many different genres of music, including electronic and new age as well as classical pieces. He was an extensive writer and filled up notebook after notebook of his thoughts and analyses of both the greater meaning of life and the day-to-day details that we all deal with. Scott was truly a third culture child with his international childhood, and his family and friends reside in many localities in the US and other countries.
Scott often joined us on voyages from the Chesapeake Bay to Florida on the ICW and at times on the open waters. He was a keen navigator and able First Mate. He was calm when the weather or conditions were not and he enjoyed taking his shift when we made 24/7 crossings. Our last voyage with him was the summer of 2022. We cruised from Genoa, IT to Sicily, Greece, Malta, Sardinia and finally to Barcelona. It was a great trip and have many memorable pictures that are part of this web site. The opening video of Capri was taken by Scott with our drone and we have many others.
Scott may you rest in peace. We miss you and will always love you.
