Sunset in the Strait of Messina
We didn’t set out for a 33-hour voyage around the toe of Italy, but we did. The weather was so nice and we had gentle 1m – 2m rolling following seas which gave us an average speed of over 7.5 knots, so we decided to push through the Strait of Messina and anchor out. When we got there, the winds through the strait increased to over 10 knots and any anchorage would not have been protected. We looked on Predict Wind and found the sole of the boot was calm, so we decided to push even further.
We found a nice marina in Crotone – Yachting Kroton Club – and decided to reserve a slip there. Crotone, a city nestled on the eastern coast of Calabria, offers a unique glimpse into the heart of southern Italy. With its rich history dating back to its founding by Greek colonists in the 8th century BC, Crotone is a treasure trove of ancient ruins and vibrant local culture.
We arrived around 1330, secured Anna, and then I took a 2-hour siesta while Brian took the scooter and explored the city. Crotone’s historical charm is evident in landmarks like the Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna, home to the solitary column of the ancient Temple of Hera Lacinia, and the medieval castle of Charles V, which provides panoramic views of the city and the Ionian Sea.
Later that afternoon, we walked through the city and stopped to have dinner at Porto Vecchio. The food was very good, and we indulged in two bottles of local wine, finishing with a grappa, making the morning a bit foggy. The local cuisine in Crotone is a delightful experience, with dishes like ‘nduja (a spicy, spreadable salami) and fresh seafood paired with Cirò wine from nearby vineyards, showcasing the bold flavors of Calabria.
We wanted to get some fuel the next morning just to be safe, but it did not open at 0800 as they said. So we set out at 0835 on our way to Dubrovnik, which is 34 hours away. We decided to make the long trip but can reconsider once we get to the heel of the boot. We can anchor out if we are tired and then go to Dubrovnik the day after.
